Why are most nhl players left handed it seems?
justin m asked: It seems like right handers are small minority in the nhl why is this? Is their some sort of advantage to be being a lefty in hocey that i am not aware of?

Most players are not lefthanded…they are lefthanded shots. I am actually lefthanded but I am a righthanded shot. The reason being is I use my top hand (left) to control the stick as this is more comfortable. Carrying the stick most of the time is done with the top of the stick, even a lot of the actual puckhandling so you tend to use your comfort hand. The “downside” would be the leverage issue, your “weak” hand (mine being the right) generated the power behind the stick (the shot) so each individual hockey player has to figure out which style they prefer so seeing which hand stick they use is not an indication of what their dominant hand in life is. A good way to see this is to find photo’s of an individual player signing something….an aweful lot of them shot with a LH stick and sign auto’s with the right hand. No advantage unless you are a goaltender, being lefthanded then offers the advantage of a player needing to adjust his shot to accomodate a left hand blocker and right hand trapper (if you like high glove side you better know if a lefty would turn it into a high blocker shot, instincts are hard to overcome sometimes).

VIP Hockey is right. It doesn’t matter what hand you write with, everyone has a different preference. I’m left-handed but play right. My bro is left handed and plays left. His son is right handed but plays left. Confused? I think I would be a much better player if I was left but that’s my own opinion.
Traditionally, and mostly in Canada, everyone is trained to play left handed. Hence you see more lefties. I think with the addition of players being trained here in the States, i.e. in So Cal, we should see more righties in the next 5 years.

they are just left hand shooters, not all are lefty hand writer. swinging left hand give righty more power and control to the shot.
